RAK Airways to link Thiruvananthapuram

RAK Airways, One of UAE’s of ficial carriers, is looking to strengthen its presence in southern India.

With its eye set on business and tourism traffic, the company said it will be adding Thiruvananthapuram as another destination shortly.

“There is huge business traffic from Kerala. We want to tap this traffic,” Mr. sheikh Faisal Bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Chairman, Ras Al khaimah Free Trade Zone and a member of the ruling family, told a group of visiting journalists from India during a trip sponsored by RAK Free Trade.

The traffic from southern India is largely made up of Haj pilgrims and expatriates working in the UAE. The airline operates flights five times a week to Kochi, from Jeddah, and Kozhikode. The airline operates from Jeddah as the airport in RAK is being upgraded.

RAK Airways, which began operations in 2006, discontinued the flights subsequently. It is now positioning itself as a niche carrier – between full service and low – cost carriers. It started spreading its wings in October after roads, ports and the airport expanded as a part of the Emirate’s plans to be come a regional transport centre and increase its exports base.
The airline has also unveiled its new branding which includes baggage tags and uniforms. “We had discontinued the service following the tough global conditions. However, business and tourism traffic have picked up since last year. The UAE is emerging as a global business hub for point- to – point business and this gives us a strategic opportunity,” he added.

According to reports, the flagship carrier is investing Dh99.3m ($27 million) in infrastructure upgrades at RAK International Airport, including new runway lights, a complete overhaul of the terminal and improved aircraft maintenance facilities.

RAK’s plans to become a regional logistics and shipping centre depend on the upgrade of the ports and the airport.
